Anti-Steering Law — Utah

In Utah, insurance companies are prohibited from requiring consumers to use a specific collision repair shop. Your insurer may suggest preferred shops — called Direct Repair Program (DRP) shops — but they cannot condition your claim payment on using one.

If your insurer tells you that repairs "won't be guaranteed" or that your coverage will be affected if you choose a shop outside their network, that language is designed to steer you. It is not a legal restriction. You choose your shop.

Document any insurer pressure in writing — that documentation may be relevant to a formal complaint.

Utah DOPL (Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing) accepts complaints about insurance steering. Phone: 801-530-6601. Website: dopl.utah.gov.
